Striped
Bass . Abundant
in all Long Island waters from spring through late fall, the Striper
is the pinnacle of most Northeast spearfisherman's quest. Stripers
run to 50lbs in the fall and will run very shallow making them accessable
to all levels of spearfishermen.
Fluke.
These toothy flatties are some
of the best tasting fish in the sea and are also in most Long Island
waters for the summer months , hence the name "Summer Flounder".
Easy to spear using a pole spear, they can put up a real fight if
you don't hit them right.
Blackfish.
The Tautog is the breadfish of
the Northeast and one of the best tasting fish you can have the pleasure
of eating. The Blackfish is often found
on rocky north shores and along jetties and over wrecks.
Black
Sea Bass. mature Black Sea Bass are most
often found in deeper waters and are preyed upon by scuba divers who
can reach them. They are attracted to any structure and are most prevelant
on artificial reefs and wrecks.
Flounder.
The little tastey flatties are in season
in the spring and fall and can offer some great close to shore spearing.
Lobster.
Available in all Long Island waters,
The Northern lobster is best spotted at night as it leaves it's lair
to wander freely over the bottom in search of food.
